Equipment
- Please ensure your bike is in good working order and is appropriate for the planned route.
- We recommend riders bring along at least one spare inner tube, tyre levers, a pump, puncture repair kit and a multi-tool.
- Please check the likely weather conditions and dress appropriately. It is always better to overdress rather than underdress in poor weather conditions.
- Bring the food and drink you will need for the ride. (Just in case the cafe is closed!)
- Please fit mudguards and a long enough rear mudflap between 1st October and 31st March. This will avoid following riders being showered with road detritus!
- All riders will be required to wear a helmet on our club rides and under 18's must bring a responsible adult along with them on the ride.
- We recommend the use of a front and rear light to make yourself visible to other road users. This applies to both poor light conditions and also whilst riding in shade on a bright sunny day.
- Please arrive in good time before the start of a scheduled ride. This will give enough time to confirm any route features and also which group you wish to ride with.
- Please ask our advice if you need guidance as to which routes and rides to join.
- As you would expect the rules of the road must be obeyed and the Highway Code followed at all times. Where possible, the route will avoid main roads and use quiet country lanes.
- The safety of every member on the ride is of paramount importance.
- Respect must be shown to other road users and club members.
- When safe to do so, you must give signals to other members of the ride to warn them of approaching or following traffic, pot holes, parked vehicles etc.
- Never ride more than two abreast.
- When riding in a group, maintain a safe distance between you and the rider(s) immediately in front, which would allow you to brake or stop if the need arose. Be aware of riders behind you.
- When encountering horses, slow down. Let their riders know you are approaching. Speak - don’t shout, so that the horse recognises an approaching human, and then pass slowly in single file when it is safe to do so. Do not do anything which might startle the horse. Please view this excellent short YouTube video from Cycling UK on cyclists passing a horse. Further information is available here on the British Horse Federation website. We are all vunerable road users so we need to work together.
- The Countryside Code must be obeyed.
- Please take your litter with you.
- Remember that when you are at the start/finish location, on the road or on any stops on the way, you are representing Malmesbury Cycling Club.
